The Unmovable Ladder

  • What is the unmovable ladder?

The unmovable ladder is a ladder found under the window of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre made up of cedarwood of Lebanon.

  • When was this ladder placed?

This was placed in 1728 and remained there for a very long time.

  • Why did the ladder stay there for centuries?

The ladder is referred to be immovable due to the Status Quo agreement which states that no cleric of the six Churches may move, re-arrange, or alter ANY property without the consent of the other five orders. (Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian, Syrian Orthodox, Coptic Christians and Ethiopians)

The Status Quo is a firman or decree of Osman III and Ottoman sultan 1757 that preserved the division of ownership and responsibilities of various Christian holy places.  (Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian, Syrian Orthodox, Coptic Christians and Ethiopians)
